Jardines de Alfàbia becomes the first “possessió” to obtain the Distintiu Serra de Tramuntana Patrimoni Mundial

The president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, presented this morning the first Distintiu Serra de Tramuntana Patrimoni Mundial to a “possessió”. In this way, Jardines de Alfàbia becomes the first emblematic site in the Serra to receive this distinction, which recognises the contribution to preserving the values and elements that led UNESCO, in 2011, to declare the Serra de Tramuntana a World Heritage Site in the category of cultural landscape.
The Distintiu is an initiative of the Consell de Mallorca to encourage the consumption of products from the Serra de Tramuntana and support the farmers who preserve the landscape through their work. To date, fifteen agri-food companies have received the distinction, along with seven other businesses in the non-food services and products sector that help promote the values of the Serra.

According to the president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, “the work carried out by the Zaforteza family to preserve such an iconic estate is a true benchmark, and this is why we are so pleased that they were the first to obtain the Distintiu; they inspire other possessions to join the initiative and help build a network of culturally and patrimonially valuable sites that also boost the local economy.”

The possessió of Alfàbia, located at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana in the municipality of Bunyola, dates back to the time of Ben-Abet in the 13th century, during the Arab rule. It is one of the oldest and most beautiful estates in Mallorca, and has been declared a site of cultural interest. Visitors reach the house by crossing a courtyard featuring a central spring and a huge banana tree. Over time, elements from different periods have been added without losing balance; in fact, Alfàbia is an example of respect for the past, of conservation, evolution, and innovation. The estate also raises pigs, goats, peacocks, and other birds.
